Athlone Town Mayor, Cllr. Frankie Keena, has called upon the law to be exacted on those responsible for the “mindless vandalism” to local authority property at the Glynwood-Tully Old Rail Trail/Greenway access site.
“These mindless individuals who caused deliberate damage to local authority property at the Glynwood–Tully Greenway access need to be apprehended, named and shamed and the appropriate consequences of the law served on them.
“A significant amount of public money has been spent in creating a car park and erecting post and rail fencing at this access point. It provides a valuable link to the Greenway for local communities both near and far.
“The Greenway is a marvellous amenity for those who love to go for a walk or cycle and the beauty of access points such as the one at Glynwood is that they provide an opportunity for looped activity trails and local access.
“Unfortunately these vandals thought it would be great fun to remove some of the railings and to cut down the large rigid gate posts.
I was recently contacted by local people who are really annoyed that someone has caused such damage to this marvellous amenity in their area. In order to take urgent action to stamp this activity out I have notified the local authority and requested that the mobile hidden CCTV cameras should be erected there for a period of time. Also, I urge the general public to contact me if they see anyone acting suspiciously at this location,” Cllr. Keena concluded.
