Local Independent Deputy, Denis Naughten, has called on the Government to immediately activate financial assistance schemes for farmers, families and businesses impacted upon by the serious flooding within the Shannon basin.
“While work is ongoing at present to protect as many homes and businesses as possible, in the case of the farming community they were forced to take stock off land last September and it could be some considerable time before they have access to this land again.
“In such instances fodder will be running low and the Department of Agriculture must activate supports for farmers in need of assistance within the catchment of the River Shannon and River Suck.
“I welcome the fact that An Taoiseach is viewing flood defences today, but he must also ensure that the flood assistance schemes for families and businesses are now activated and available to those who need them,” Deputy Naughten remarked.
The Independent Deputy noted that a small number of families and businesses have already felt the brunt of such flooding to date.
“The fact is that a small number of families and businesses have already been impacted by this severe flooding, along with many farmers, and they should not have to wait until it reaches a crisis point before these funds are activated.
“I have already contacted the relevant Departments seeking the activation of these supports but the Taoiseach’s direct intervention would be welcomed.
“He must also ensure the maximum possible flow of water through both Meelick and Parteen Weirs and again a direct input from the Office of An Taoiseach would be beneficial at this time,” Deputy Naughten commented.
