Athlone Castle to host Mapping Urban Ireland travel exhibition

Athlone Castle will host 'Mapping Urban Ireland', a travelling exhibition from The Royal Irish Academy from mid-February to March.

The 'Mapping Urban Ireland' exhibition will consist of nine informative banner stands and a copy of the Irish Historic Towns Atlas: Athlone, by Dr. Harman Murtagh and will be on display at Athlone Castle from Thursday, February 13 until Sunday, March 8.

This very informative exhibition explores the variety of purposes that maps of Irish Towns were produced for over the last four centuries (including military use and propaganda ). It also looks at maps as a fascinating resource for the study of the development of Irish towns over time.

"We are delighted to bring this exhibition to Athlone Castle and believe it will be very well received. The section I think, will appeal most to the people of Athlone, is the story of the Ordnance Survey from 1833 and 1846. During this period it produced large scale maps of Irish towns including Athlone. This map is a part of the Irish Historic Town Atlas: Athlone, by Dr Harman Murtagh. The Atlas was published in 1994 by the Royal Irish Academy and will be displayed alongside the exhibition, allowing visitors to discover the way Athlone changed and developed throughout the centuries," Joanna Grobosz, Cultural Officer at Athlone Castle, remarked.

Normal admission rates apply to view the travelling exhibition. For more information contact Athlone Castle on 090 6442130 or email: [email protected].
