Athlone RSC swimming pool temporarily closed to public

Roof damage has resulted in the temporary closure of the swimming pool in Athlone Regional Sports Centre.

Speaking this week, Liam Cunningham, Athlone RSC Manager, detailed the reason pertaining to the closure of the swimming pool with an expectancy that the facility would re-open for public use towards the end of this week.

“As a result of the recent impact of Storm Brendan, a stainless steel washer became dislodged from the internal area of the roof above our main swimming pool area.

“Following an initial assessment from a local structural engineer it was recommended to request the manufacturers of these washers on-site promptly to enable a more thorough site inspection take place.

“With this in mind, the management of Athlone RSC to take the temporary safety precaution of closing all access to the main pool hall until such time the site inspection could take place. While it may seem extreme, it was something we felt we had to do in the very slim chance that another washer became dislodged,” Liam emphasised.

Liam noted that the UK based company and their design engineer are presently on-site at the RSC in their quest to make the roof safe enabling full re-opening of the swimming pool to the local public.

“Additionally, we are currently working with some net install companies to see if we can obtain a temporary safety measure above the swimming pool area irrespective of how long the roof investigation takes,” Liam affirmed.

Despite temporary closure of the swimming pool facility, all other fitness facilitie at Athlone RSC remain open to include the gym, sauna and steam room, astro turf and Eat Unique café,” Liam concluded.
