The annual Soroptimist girls public speaking competition took place in Our Lady’s Bower Athlone secondary school recently.
Students from three local schools took part and spoke on a range of topics including, human rights, health, environment, democracy, empowerment of women and friendship and volunteering.
Soroptimists are part of a global network working to improve the lives of women and girls throughout the world. The mission is to educate, enable and empower and these young ladies certainly embody the spirit of Soroptimism.
Participants spoke for six minutes on their chosen topic with clarity and conviction having researched and rehearsed a further two minutes on an impromptu topic in which they showed great confidence and skill, educating and entertaining all in attendance.
The two qualifiers go forward to the regional final which will be held in Drogheda in January 2020.
