Proposed Quay enhancement works to improve amenity value

A significant improvement in the amenity and tourist value of the area between Athlone Castle and the River Shannon along the Quays has been mooted.

Speaking at the Athlone Moate Municipal District monthly meeting, Director of Services, Barry Kehoe, detailed developments which have been proposed for the location.

“This area is the departure point for boat tours, the site of the old town bridge and is a very popular tourist location. In this context it is proposed that the entire area from Main Street to the town bridge would be enhanced with the installation of limestone paving, new benches, suitable trees, a cycle ramp, safety railing and an underground Dutch Dam type flood gate to protect the adjacent Main Street from flooding.

“Enhancement works in this particular area will be complemented further by the three urban regeneration projects which have been detailed to commence in our town centre,” the Director of Services commented.

Funding for the proposed development, work on which is hoped to commence in December (following the submission of a Part 8 planning application ), will be provided by the Office of Public Works, with an expected construction conclusion towards the end of 2020.
