Planning permission is being sought for the construction of a new Supervalu store, including 150 car parking spaces, in Moate.
The application lodged with Westmeath County Council on July 31, 2008, by BK Developments Ltd, is seeking permission to demolish the existing Dawn Dairies Facility and to construct in its place a standalone supermarket at Legan, Dublin Road, Moate and associated ancillary accommodation totalling 2,405 sqm gross floor area.
The supermarket will include a deli counter (with an element of hot food for consumption off the premises ), off licence (to allow for the sale of intoxicating liquor for consumption off the premises where the floor area devoted to same shall not exceed 120 sqm ), storage areas at ground floor, with offices and staff facilities and plant room at first floor.
According to the application, permission is also being sought for a new vehicular entrance to the site off a new roundabout on the Dublin Road (N6 ), a new service access road to the car-park (150 spaces ) and to a service yard and loading bay, hard and soft landscaping, relocation of the existing ESB substation /switch room and all associated site and development works including the demolition of the existing Dawn Dairies Facility and associated buildings.
A decision by the Council is expected on September 24, 2008.
Meanwhile, An Bord Pleanála has recently refused permission for the retention of three 22 metre high flag poles in the forecourts of a car sales premises at Garrankesh Td, No 1 Moydrum Business Park, Athlone.
Planning permission had been lodged with Westmeath County Council in October 2007 by P and J Casey but it was refused. An appeal was lodged with An Bord Pleanála in December 2007.
The planning board upheld the local authority’s decision for two reasons. One was related to the injury to visual amenity because of the height and the prominent siting of the flag poles. The second reason related to the traffic hazard because the flag poles would distract users of the nearby public roads. It was noted that the flag poles tower over the existing premises and are twice the height of adjacent street lights.
