The culmination of a successful summer of Junior Boys golf at Athlone Golf Club saw 43 youthful enthusiasts participate in a well organised competition on the scenic course as they utilised essential tips honed during their coaching mornings.

The Johnny Bracken memorial cup was won by Darragh McGrath and presented by Johnny’s wife Mary to whom the boys club is greatly indebted. The most improved junior golfer was Jim Carney who the Joe Carney Millennium Cup. Other winners on the day were Charlie O’Carroll, Noah Heavey, Finnán Kilcommons and Cillian Curley.

The under 10s were expertly coached by Frank McGowan, Padraic Kilcommons, Owen McGrath, Shane Clearly, Diarmuid O’Brien and Darragh McGrath. A turnout of sixteen under 10s later enjoyed some rewarding goodies, a wonderful finale!

The junior golfers were looked after by Joe Carney, Johnny Kinahan, Mick Stapleton, Michael Healy, Mick Cleary to whom great gratitude is due for giving of their time and energies in promoting junior golf.

The main man who spearheaded everything was Michael McBrearty, the junior convenor. Great credit is due to him and his son, Cian, for the tremendous effort they put in organising and directing coaching and participation in Inter-Club events.

Great credit is further due to Athlone Golf Club’s Pro, Kevin Grealy, for all he has done for junior golf, being assisted by Danny O’Connor the assistant Pro. The club can look forward to a bright future and the hope that our present crop of golfers will achieve their true potential.
