Local branch of Extinction Rebellion calls for climate change action

Members of a newly formed local branch of Extinction Rebellion took to the streets of Athlone this past weekend to raise awareness about the ecological crisis that we are facing and to highlight the need for direct action to force the Government to act urgently on climate change.

The group handed out information and engaged people attending the event in meaningful discussions about the climate crisis.

“Many of the people that we spoke to today were aware that climate change is a serious threat to our very way of life. We are encouraging everyone to get involved. Climate change is at the point of emergency. We need as many people as possible to be part of the change that is needed,” Aisling Connaughton of Extinction Rebellion, said.

“From speaking to people in Athlone today, it is clear that many are extremely worried about the climate crisis and believe that our government is not doing enough to tackle the issue. It is also clear that there is a sense of powerlessness among many as the crisis seems so insurmountable. But there is power in numbers so we are encouraging everyone to get in touch or come along to one of our talks or demonstrations over the coming weeks to explore what meaningful action we can take together,” Julie O’ Donoghue, a fellow group volunteer, stated.

Following on from their weekend exertions,Extinction Rebellion Athlone will host a free public talk in Roscommon Town on the impact of climate change and what can be done about it. The talk will take place at 7.30pm on Monday, September 9, in J.J. Harlow’s Bar, Roscommon Town and will be free of charge.

This talk is part of Extinction Rebellion Ireland’s national direct action campaign calling on the government to act urgently on climate change.

Aisling Connaughton and Julie O’ Donoghue will present the talk, which will focus on the ecological crisis, the current psychology around climate breakdown and what meaningful action can be taken.
