On Tuesday morning of last week there were scenes of both joy and relief as the students of Athlone Community College received their leaving certificate results.. The results surpassed even the high expectations of Principal Eileen Donohoe and Deputy Principals Chris Forde, Pauline Fadden and Deirdre Whitlow.
What was particularly pleasing was that students right across the board did so well with practically all students making sure of their desired place in college.
Of course there were individual triumphs with Emma Lennon achieving 7 H1s (including Maths ) and Luke Moric 6 H1s with Maths and an additional H2. Both students accordingly broke the 700 points barrier with several others exceeding the 600 points barrier.
The class of 2019 have had acceptances into Medicine, Law, Engineering, Business, Teaching and Pharmacy, to mention a few while some have opted for apprenticeships or other routes into their chosen career.
Naturally, Mrs. Donohoe was beaming praising both the students and their teachers while not forgetting the parents.
“These results debunk the myths that a big school cant deliver ,she said, obviously the ability to offer such a range of subjects and excellent teachers are fundamental to our success. Up on 50 percent exceeded 500 points which is truly phenomenal.
“We offered Applied Maths some years ago and to see the H1s achieved there is truly spectacular. All subjects and all teachers delivered for us which is marvellous.
“We take pride in every student not just the phenomenal achievers. It takes all types of voices to make a choir and we are singing today and it is wonderful to see so many happy students and happiness is what it is all about,” Ms. Donohoe enthused.
