The Dean Crowe Theatre launched its new programme of activity this week. Packed with an eclectic mix of events, the theatre has something for everybody over the coming months. Highlights of the programme include theatre with Phelim Drew, music with Matthew Gilsenan, children’s theatre, family entertainment, schools shows, and lots of comedy with Tommy Tiernan, Rory’s Stories, Joe Rooney, and Patrick McDonnell as well as the Dirtbirds’ Self Help Tour.
Recently appointed theatre manager, Killian Collins, says he is really looking forward to the challenge at the venue.
“When I arrived I told the board of directors that I wanted to help the Dean Crowe to become the best regional theatre in Ireland,” he said. “I truly believe in that goal. The people of Athlone have an amazing theatre right on your doorstep. It’s here. It’s open for business. It’s for you. And it needs your support. It needs you to turn up and make it live and breathe. It needs you to give it energy.”
With the help of the Department of Culture, Heritage and An Gaeltacht, the theatre is currently undergoing a facilities upgrade to enhance the audience’s experience and enjoyment. More than anything else, the Dean Crowe is a place where you can have a really good time.
Tommy Tiernan opens the new season on Thursday September 12. This is a fast paced and exuberant celebration of everything that’s wild, wrong, and wonderful about being alive right here, right now.
On Saturday September 21 audience members can spend a magical evening remembering the great Irish lyric tenor who has charmed and electrified audiences the world over in the early years of the 20th century. Matthew Gilsenan (from internationally renowned The Celtic Tenors ) is on a passionate mission to tell the fascinating story of John McCormack.
On Saturday September 28, join wildlife filmmaker Colin Stafford-Johnson on a journey of discovery along the western seaboard of Ireland. Stafford-Johnson recently presented the BBC series Wild Ireland - Edge of the World. Hear his tales of adventure from years spent tracking down Ireland’s most elusive creatures - all accompanied by stunning visuals that will make you wish you were there.
