Buccaneers touch rugby squad travelled to Old Belvedere RFC on Saturday last for round two of the Ireland Touch Series (ITS ).
Buccaneers faced a punishing schedule on the day with seven games in total. A slow start meant two early defeats after poor performances against Westport and Raccoon West of Galway.
Game three proved to be a highly entertaining contest with a late try by Paul Gavin, his third of the competitive tie ensuring parity with opponents, Sandymount.
Super club, Donnybrook, who field up to three teams in such competitions were strongly fancied to account for Buccaneers in game four, but the Athlone team worked cohesively as a unit to secure a shock win, their inaugural success over illustrious opposition.
Game five against the Kiwi-influenced Dublin Sports Club ended in defeat for Buccaneers, with the southern hemisphere flair proving the on field difference.
The next game proved the most disappointing as Buccaneers failed to perform against the veteran Marley Park Tipsters. The wily Dubliners used their vast experience to sneak a narrow win with a controversial late touchdown.
Perennial bogey team, Belfast Warriors, provided last match opposition for Buccaneers. Having suffered defeat on three previous occasions, Buccaneers ended the sequence with a well deserved draw come the shrill of the final whistle.
Buccaneers MVP for the day was Manuel Aymerich who put in a massive shift in defence as well as posing a threat in attack, while Paul Gavin was top scorer with five tries. Round three of the ITS takes place Belfast on August 3.
