‘Coming Home’ exhibition at Roscommon Arts Centre

Roscommon Arts Centre welcome renowned locally born artist, Brian O’Doherty’s ‘Coming Home’ as their opening exhibition launching their new visual art space as part of their 8 Degrees West Programme.

Born in Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon in 1928, his works are on display in New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Pompidou in Paris, IMMA and the Hugh Lane in Dublin.

Brian O’Doherty was honoured with the Freedom of County Roscommon at a reception held at IMMA in 2018 when he was in the country for the “One, Here, Now” installation at Sirius Arts Centre. It was at this reception that Brian was invited to show his work in the new gallery space at Roscommon Arts Centre.

The title of the exhibition “Coming Home” marks Brian O’Doherty’s first ever exhibition in his home county. “Coming Home” includes a number of his new works, recently published by Stoney Road Press as limited edition prints in addition to a new variation on Rope Drawing #128 Flipped Corner (Green/Blue ) from the IMMA Collection. A new publication, of the same title, to co-incide with the exhibition, is also available from the arts centre. The book includes commissioned contributions from Professor Luke Gibbons, artist Katie Holten and arts writers Joanne Laws and Sue Rainsford in response to O’Doherty’s expansive work.

The exhibition continues until Friday, July 26. Gallery opening hours are 10am–5pm Tuesday to Friday. Admission is free and all are invited to view the exhibition.
