Athlone based Senator, Gabrielle McFadden, has called on the Minister for Communications, Richard Bruton, to do whatever is necessary to secure the future of the An Post Mail Centre in Athlone.
Speaking in Seanad Éireann, the Senator stressed the importance of the Centre to the Midlands and noted the concern of those working there and their families pertaining to rumours of a possible closure.
“Athlone Mail Centre is a purpose-built facility which was constructed sixteen years ago. Its location, in the centre of Ireland, only two minutes drive from the main Dublin to Galway motorway, makes it ideal for ease of access for deliveries entering and leaving the premises.
“This Mail Centre employs approximately 180 staff, both full and part time. The staff are amazing and go way beyond the call of duty in the course of their jobs, so much so that for five consecutive years they have been awarded top mail centre in Ireland,” Senator McFadden emphasised.
Senator McFadden has previously raised this issue in the Oireachtas and with the Chief Executive of An Post and has acknowledged the support of Roscommon TD Denis Naughten on the matter. She is again calling on other Oireachtas members in the Midlands to back this campaign and to show public support for the Athlone Mail Centre and particularly for those working there.
