Colaiste Chiarain were awarded the Green Flag for ‘Litter and Waste’ at a recent ceremony hosted by An Taisce at the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone.
Three members of the Green Schools committee attended the event, namely Conor O’Regan, Charlotte White and Dara Morris, accompanied by the Green Schools Co-ordinator, Ms. Marie Geraghty and Principal, Mr. Brendan Waldron.
The students were also presented with a certificate for their school, which is presently undergoing a complete refurbishment at its Summerhill base.
The formal raising of the Green Flag took place prior to the secondary school breaking for the summer recess with former pupil Deputy Denis Naughten in attendance.
In his post Green Flag raising address, Deputy Naughten noted the school’s great commitment to recycling methods, with single use plastic being eliminated over the last two years. He stressed the dangers of plastic in the environment and spoke about the plastic tide, the aim to reduce CO2 emissions and the importance of tree reforestation.
“We must all work together to look after our planet for future generations,” the Deputy emphasised.
