Local Independent Councillor, Michael O’Brien, has called on the Athlone Municipal District to provide a digital speed sign on the Dublin road in Moate.
Cllr. O’Brien was speaking about his proposal after tabling a motion at the April meeting of Athlone Municipal District.
“I’ve received many representations from constituents in Moate looking for this digital device to be erected at this location. This is a built up area with many housing estates nearby. It a busy and indeed, lethal stretch of road. Many cars are flying into town, way over the speed limit and I would like to see a survey carried out in this regard, with the erection of a digital sign warning motorists of their speed of paramount importance.
“It is nigh impossible to cross along this stretch of road. There is an utmost need for a pedestrian crossing in the locality, with the nearest one is in the centre of town,” Cllr. O’Brien remarked.
Supporting Cllr. O’Brien’s views, Cllr. John Dolan noted that the erection of a digital speed sign in Ballinahown was having a major impact on the attitude of motorists as they approached the village.
“Coming into Moate you are travelling down a steep hill and that is only an encouragement for motorists to gain speed as they drive. WE, as a Council, must do whatever we can to prevent an accident occuring along this stretch of road,” Cllr. Dolan noted.
The Council executive, in unison, concurred that if the members so decided, funding would be considered for it in the context of the 2020 Roads Programme.
