Supremacy mode maintained for St. Peters as an away win at Ballymoe on Sunday afternoon saw the club retain their RDFL Premier Division league title.
Prior to the encounter, one of five teams could have realistically annexed the league crown, such was the congested nature of the division, but the 3-0 win, sealed with a brace of goals from Mark McConnell and a solitary strike from Darragh Concannon, ensured the title remained with Padraig Moran’s charges.
“We are obviously delighted to retain our league title, and to do so with one game remaining is even more satisfactory,” Padraig remarked, acknowledging that the dismissal of a Ballymoe player allowed for St. Peters to exert their authority as the game progressed.
With the division splitting into two sections, Padraig, who played his underage football with the McCarty Park team and returned to the green and white shirt in latter years to win a Counties Cup medal, stated that his players upped their level of performance as the league reached its conclusion.
“Two standout results during the campaign were our home win against Ballymoe who were in top form at the time and achieving an away victory in Strokestown when 3-1 in arrears. That gave us the momentum to push on and retain the league title,” Padraig added.
Still in both cup competitions, Padraig will be hoping to add further silverware to the cabinet and noted the contribution of the younger squad members who have positively gelled with the experienced players as the season progressed.
“With the assistance of my brother Derek, Aidan Ward, Davey McCormack and his son Joe, it has been a united effort and hopefully, we will have further positive results in the cup games to come,” Padraig concluded.
