Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Transport and Westmeath/Longford political constituent, Robert Troy TD, will be holding talks with the taxi company Uber and the NTA in relation to a rural taxi service, during which the Deputy aims to explore the feasibility of such a system.
Speaking with regard to the issue, Deputy Troy, noted that, if such transport development was feasible, it would be of significance for rural communities.
“I have raised this matter with Minister Ross in the past and he has consistently deferred to the NTA, who are responsible for integrated local and rural transport. He is a Minister who is only too happy to abdicate his duties.
“I am delighted to see Minister Jim Daly come around to this way of thinking and I believe his proposals warrant further examination. The best place for this is the Transport Committee and I will ensure they get scrutinised properly.
“If feasible, this would prove a fantastic addition to rural Ireland. It would see a resurgence in social life and lessen the effects of isolation. The NTA should explore this idea to ensure it is fit for purpose and that in using it people can feel safe and secure.
“This is not re-inventing the wheel. We have to remember that Uber works in many countries across the developed world and I do not see why we cannot tailor the possible service to ensure that it would work for us in rural Ireland,” Deputy Troy commented.
