Foods that steal your energy levels

Cara Cunningham, MINDI, Community Dietitian

Most people would not be aware that if they are feeling tired it might be because of something you are or are not eating. If you are feeling constantly tired it would be important to check with your GP to ensure there is no underlying cause for this. But you can also spring clean your diet to make sure it doesn’t include any ‘energy robbers’.

Caffeine in coffee, teas and many soft drinks have the effect of boosting our energy. However, this is usually followed by a drop in energy. By restricting these drinks (or making coffee/teas less strong ) you can help keep the balance in your day.

Sweets and refined carbohydrates such as white bread and cereals can give you what some people describe as a sugar rush however they are often followed by a slump a few hours later. It is better to go for wholegrain bread and fruits which will be broken down more slowly and give a steady release of energy into the blood stream.

Not being very active can surprisingly be quite draining. The fitter you are the more energy you will feel you have so it is important to get out for a walk or do some activity most days, it’s also good for your mental health!

A healthy body that is active will mean you feel full of energy and ready for all the life throws at you.
