Local Independent Councillor, Michael O’Brien, has welcomed the news that Westmeath County Council will go to tender in 2019 to upgrade Westmeath’s public lighting to LED.
The news arrives after Cllr. O’Brien raised the issue of public lighting at the 2019 budget meeting of Westmeath County Council on Monday. He used the example of Wexford County Council who have committed to a €5m upgrade programme that will see an annual saving in the region of €800,000.
It was agreed by the executive that such a programme is warranted and that they would put the project out to tender in 2019.
“This is an ambitious, but a necessary programme of work that will see our public lighting being upgraded to energy efficient LED lighting. The council have done good work in recent years in areas like Valleycourt in Athlone and many street lights across the Athlone and Moate area. A comprehensive capital investment is necessary though, so I’m delighted that the council have now committed to upgrade public lighting in all our towns and villages right across the Athlone Municipal District and county," Cllr. O’Brien enthused.
