Overnight water restrictions in Athlone were due to burst main

Water restrictions in Athlone overnight were due to end between 6am and 8am this morning following a burst water main.

Irish Water and Westmeath County Council imposed the restrictions yesterday after a burst water main led to reduced water levels in the Annagh Reservoir which supplies Athlone.

Restrictions were in place overnight in Athlone, Baylin, Mount Temple, The Ories, Garrycastle, Dublin Road, Ardnaglug, Fardrum, Moydrum, Blyry, Killyon Hill, Bonavalley, Athlone and surrounds in Co Westmeath from 10pm yesterday. "This action is being taken to ensure that there is an adequate quantity of water available to supply industries, schools, residences and commercial activities during business hours," Irish Water said in a statement yesterday.

The water supply was due to be restored once the network had refilled.
