Addressing the monthly meeting of the Municipal District, Cllr. Aengus O’Rourke called on his elected representative colleagues and administration to allocate relevant funding in support of a national schools debating competion to take place next year.
“In my role as Town Mayor, this was one of my finest initiatives and I would like to see the event advanced on a more formal footing and to be held on an annual basis,” Cllr. O’Rourke noted.
Complimenting Cllr. O’Rourke’s initiative, Independent Councillor, Michael O’Brien said that it require a modest budget and funds shoukld be allocated towards the project.
“I commend Cllr. O’Rourke’s initiative in this regard. I was absolutely blown away by the debating calibre of the students involved in the 2018 competition and as a local authority we should be involved in such events,” Cllr. O’Brien remarked.
Cllr. John Dolan acknowledged that the initiative was a “great concept”, while Town Mayor, Cllr. Frankie Keena, further commending Cllr. O’Rourke noted that it was “important for continuity and experience that the debating competition remain in place.”
