Local Independent Councillor, Michael O’Brien, has welcomed an amendment to the council parking bye laws that will see parking permits being made available for businesses that do not have alternative access to parking in the three hour parking zone in Moate.
The changes to the bye laws were unanimously passed by the elected representatives at the October meeting of Athlone Municipal District.
The motion was originally raised earlier this year by Cllr Michael O’Brien, who said some people working in Moate had been issued with fines for leaving their vehicles parked beyond the three hour window allowed.
“This is a welcome development for businesses and their staff who do not have alternative access to parking in the three hour parking zone. Some businesses do not enjoy access to alternative parking and it is unfair that people should be fined while at work.
Thanking his colleagues for their support for the proposal, Cllr. O’Brien added that permits will be advertised in the coming weeks with relevant application forms will be available from the Westmeath County Council website.
