A call for the provision of additional charging areas for electric cars in Athlone was made at the Municipal District meeting.
Speaking on the topic, Cllr. John Dolan noted that there were only five charging stations in the town presently.
“We need to be forward thinking in this regard. We could look at installing electric car charging in areas such asGolden Island, the Strand, Connaught Street car park. For instance, there is only one charging area on the west side of the town. By 2020 it is estimated that there will be between five and six thousand electric cars on our roads,” the Councillor commented.
Echoing those sentiments, Cllr. Tom Farrell added that there would be an increase in the sale of electric cars.
“With the provision of a relevant grant to financially aid the purchase of electric cars, there is certain to be an increase in the number of these vehicles on our roads. We need to look at installing charging areas in our rural areas too,” Cllr. Farrell noted.
