Played over a two day spell in TEG Cusack Park, Mullingar, at the weekend, there was notable county league final joy for both Athlone and Garrycastle as they collected confidence boosting silverware ahead of the championship season.
Denying St. Loman's what would have been their sixth consecutive league title, Garrycastle claimed the Division 1 title but had to endure two periods of extra time before seeing off the reigning county champions by a mere two points.
Suffering just the solitary defeat on their route to the final (to local rivals Athlone ), the green and red clad men deserved their victory and prepares their mindset positively as they aim to make an impression in the forthcoming senior football championship (see pic in Community Diary ).
Athlone claimed the Division 4 crown with a comfortable win over Mullingar Shamrocks. A blistering first half performance set the tone and a commanding thirteen point interval lead was never going to be reclawed by Shamrocks. Richie Greene was to the scoring fore with three green flags.
The result is a morale boosting filip as Athlone seek to go further than last year's achievement of a semi-final berth in the junior championship.
