Church Street enhancement project works progressing and on schedule

The Church Street enhancement project remains on schedule, according to District Manager, Mr. Pat Keating, who addressed the members of the Council Chamber at the monthly meeting of Athlone Municipal District.

‘We are happy with the progress, the contractors are happy and work remains on schedule. Weekly liaison meetings continue to be held with Athlone Chamber of Commerce, local traders, Westmeath County Council and the contractor on site where ongoing work is outlined and relevant issues discussed.

The transformative €4 million enhancement scheme, which is supported under the EU Urban Designated Fund, is a major, positive redevelopment of the heart of Athlone’s shopping district and a project that will have far reaching benefits of the local community.

The overall aim is to transform Church Street and the heart of Athlone into a more inviting and welcome space, reinvigorating the retail viability of the area, encouraging people to spend longer periods in the area by creating more opportunities for those to gather and interact, contributing to the economic development of the town centre.’

Acknowledging the District Manager’s comments, Cllr. Aengus O’Rourke noted that the quality of workmanship was of the ‘highest calibre’, adding that the contractor had been working during the weekends to make up for any time lost during the enhancement project.
