World record breaker Soresh Joachim runs for peace on Athlone Greenway

Suresh Joachim, a familiar member of the Guinness Book of World Records Hall of Fame, chose to sprint across Athlone’s Greenway last week as part of his 20th year of breaking world records celebration.

In honour of his 20 year achievement, Mr Joachim had decided to run across the world for what he had titled, “The World Peace Marathon”, to raise one billion dollars for World Vision, one of the world’s leading humanitarian organisations.

On his way he chose Athlone’s Greenway for its picturesque scenery and natural setting to complete a section of his marathon last Monday.

He began his journey on Christmas day of last year in Bethlehem, Jerusalem and has since ran in four continents comprising of 59 countries, 72 cities and covering an astonishing 2,278.8 kilometres.

The part of his marathon that took place in Athlone was organised by local man Kandee Singham and was supported by Involve Youth services of Ireland. Mr Joachim travelled from Garrycastle to Moate and back without a single break.

Mayor Aengus O’Rourke was at the starting line to give some words of welcome and encouragement ahead of the 21 km run in one of the hottest days in Ireland of 2018.

Mr O’Rourke said, while congratulating Suresh on his journey so far towards world peace, “you’re doing your part in the work that you do, all the people that you meet, all the countries that you visit and all the miles that you’ve clocked up on your journey, for that I say, congratulations to you”.

After his run, Suresh visited Athlone Castle where he met Athlone Community Radio’s, Ursula Ledwith. Ursula offered a warm welcome to Suresh and aired a short interview around the incredible journey he had already completed.

Suresh documented his journey through short video clips with local individuals. Among them was Principal Noel Casey from Our Lady’s Bower, who along with students, cheered Suresh towards the next leg of his journey.

All who briefly met the man during his time in Athlone offered him support and praise for the amazing challenge he is working to conquer. It was an evening enjoyed by all who attended.
