A funeral has been held for local woman, Jackie McGuire from Monksfield Park, Athlone, who passed away last week after getting into difficulty while swimming in the River Shannon.
Both the RNLI volunteers and the Athlone sub aqua club came to her assistance on the evening of May 23 when the woman was swimming at the golden mile just north of Athlone town.
Ms McGuire, a 43 year old mother of two, was transferred by the coastguard helicopter Rescue 118 to the Galway University Hospital shortly after. However, she sadly passed away in the early hours of the following morning.
The mother of two was laid to rest in Coosan Cemetery on Monday following a requiem mass in St Mary’s Church.
The Lough Ree RNLI and Athlone Sub Aqua Club have both extended their condolences to Ms McGuire's family.
