Coláiste Chiaráin win U16 Connacht title

Coláiste Chiaráin secured the U16 Connacht soccer title last weekend after a 2-0 win over St Joseph’s Patrician College, ‘The Bish’, from Galway City.

Last Friday, May 18, as the sun shone brightly on the all-weather pitch at Athlone Institute of Technology, spectators witnessed a fierce contest between two teams determined to be crowned U16 champions.

Coláiste Chiaráin entered the match as underdogs against the much fancied St Joseph’s. Two very evenly matched teams fought hard for possession and the deadlock was broken with a well worked free-kick from Kyle Conway just before half-time. As a result, the local Athlone side went in at the break one goal to nil up.

The second half began with the Galway side competing keenly to restore parity. The students from Coláiste Chiaráin defended their lines heroically and eventually caught St Joseph’s off guard with a swift and clinical counter-attack. Adam Dowling swooped on a loose pass and ran the length of the pitch where he coolly slotted the ball of the corner of the net for a two goal lead.

While St Joseph’s continued to fight valiantly, the match was over as a contest and Coláiste Chiaráin emerged as 2-0 victors to secure the Connacht title.

Congratulations to the students of Coláiste Chiaráin and their manager, Mr Eoin Mannion.
