Keeping it Beating launches 24-hour CPR Relay event

The Keep it Beating committee have launched a 24 hour CPR Relay, which will take place this June 9 in Athlone.

The event is being held in aid of The Irish Community Rapid Response (ICRR ), a voluntary organisation comprising doctors, advanced paramedics and medical professionals who aim to deliver critical A&E intervention within the hour.

The organiser of the event, Séamus Ó Fátharta, said the purpose of this event is to raise awareness of the vital importance of CPR.

Guest speakers included Gerry Glynn, advanced paramedic with NAS, and Cllr John Dolan, who suffered a heart attack last year and was saved by his son preforming CPR while awaiting assistance from the ambulance service.

Cllr Dolan spoke about his own personal experience at the launch and the importance of quick action when there is an emergency. The Keep it Beating committee said that they are thrilled to have Cllr Dolan as an ambassador for this initiative.

This campaign hopes to save countless lives by training more than 250 people in Athlone on how to preform CPR.

The committee is asking members of the public to register a place on the day and to contribute a minimum of €5 towards Irish Community Rapid Response.

Those participating can select any 10 minute slot they like for training within the 24 hours. CPR is a simple but lifesaving skill. Approximately 13 people die every day as a result of cardiac arrest, meaning having this skill can saves lives.

For this initiative to work, the public's support and participation is essential. Let us make Athlone CPR ready!

The relay will take place in Golden Island at 9am and it will continue for a full 24 hours on June 9.
