Possible new €40 million suburb for Athlone

Building contractors across the Midlands will be holding their breath as a decision on a €40m development on Athlone's west side is expected from the planning department this week.

Belmullet-based firm Erris Homes is hoping to build 210 homes at Westlodge, between the Shamrock Lodge Hotel and Battery Heights, as well as a creche and community care facilities.

This application was made last July and is the second time this firm is attempting this project, having been turned down in 2007.

The plans, which are available to view at the council offices in Athlone, seek approval for 38 semi-detached, 40 terraced, three detached, 20 duplexes and 109 apartments to be built.

A new through road onto Battery Road is to be built and allow access subsequently onto the Clonown Road to facilitate the projected traffic flow.

Dublin firm MBK Designs are the architects and the decision is due on Thursday.
