Irish Water said last night that water quality samples have detected cryptosporidium in the Westport Public Water Supply.

The first stage of the Galway City Water Conservation project, estimated to cost in the region of €800,000 and which will involve the installation of bulk water meters throughout the city, is set to begin at the beginning of next month.

Phil Hogan, Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, yesterday approved the commitment of the necessary capital funding to enable Galway City Council accept the tender of €600,000 from Shareridge Ltd to carry out works under the National Water Conservation Programme.
