Medicines for Ireland (MFI) are urging Government to heed recent warnings from GPs and pharmacists nationwide on the growing risk of medicines shortages as inflation, energy and transport costs continue to rise, and global supply chain disruptions persist.

The Irish Cancer Society is in urgent need of volunteer drivers to provide transport for cancer patients to and from their hospital chemotherapy treatments.

There has been a huge demand for consumer products in 2020 and 2021. Covid-19 has resulted in people spending more time at home than ever before. Lockdown especially saw all non-essential workers confined to their homes. Investing in goods such as clothing, electronics, and furniture was one of the few ways that people could spend their discretionary income from the comfort of their own homes. However, this major spike in consumer purchasing is only one of many challenges that the retail industry is currently facing.

The extreme winter conditions of 1846/47 exacerbated the mounting crisis that the Great Famine had already created. The number of deaths from hunger in Galway town averaged between 25 and 30 a week. As well as the main workhouse on Newcastle Road (now the University College Hospital) auxiliary workhouses had opened at Barna, Newtownsmyth, Merchants Road, St Helen Street, and in Dangan. Six soup kitchens operated throughout the town feeding some 7,000 people a day and more as newcomers streamed in from rural districts. On one bitterly cold morning two children were found frozen to death on High Street. Another child dead nearby.

This Sunday the roads of the county will see a very interesting sight when a fundrasing truck run kicks off in Ballina, and will make stops in Foxford, Castlebar, Westport, before ending up in Newport.

There will be a unique event in Hoban’s car park, Castlebar, on Sunday August 14 at 1.30pm as part of a fund raising drive to help a very special local and worthy cause. As a part of the Newport Truck Run taking place from Ballina to Newport, more than 30 trucks will roll into the car park at 1.30pm and park and give all truck enthusiasts an opportunity to get up close and personal with these machines of the road. Truck drivers will be bringing their cabs from all over the island of Ireland to support this charity appeal. The trucks will remain there until 3pm and during that time everyone is invited to go along to this magnificent sight while helping the cause.
