New chronic disease hubs provide vital support for diabetics
People living with diabetes in the West have praised the enhancements in diabetes care as they benefit from faster access to specialised care as a result of the new HSE Chronic Disease Hub. The move-away from hospital-based care means that patients have access to highly specialised clinical teams, closer to their homes. This comes as they prepare to mark World Diabetes on November 14.
Diabetes Ireland makes the DigiBete Self-Management app freely available
Following a successful pilot project in Limerick University Hospital, Diabetes Ireland and DigiBete have spent the past few months training other paediatric diabetes teams on how to use the multi-award-winning App to educate their families on self-managing Type 1 diabetes.

NUI Galway ‘D1 Now’ programme to improve services for young adults with Type 1 diabetes
A diabetes research team at NUI Galway’s School of Medicine has developed a novel approach to improve how diabetes services are delivered to young adults. The team has published two new open access articles detailing the formation of their ‘Young Adult Panel’, comprising of nine young adults aged 18–25 years with type 1 diabetes. This young group have helped design the ‘D1 Now’ intervention programme, which aims to improve diabetes services by reimagining care and moving beyond the traditional clinic.
NUI Galway recruiting participants for online chronic pain study
The Centre for Pain Research at NUI Galway is currently recruiting people with chronic pain (pain that has lasted for 3 months or more) to take part in a trial of the ‘Pain Course’, a free online pain self-management programme. The study offers adults living with chronic pain the opportunity to avail of this eight-week Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy course, in the comfort of their own home.

New approaches in delivering care to young adults with type 1 diabetes are needed, according to researchers in Galway. A multi-disciplinary research team from NUI Galway and Galway University Hospitals have carried out a systematic review of international literature which has been published in the journal Diabetic Medicine.
