Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh 26 has officially been launched, marking another milestone in the celebration of bilingual excellence among businesses and organisations in Galway City. Widely regarded as one of the city’s most prestigious accolades, the Gradam recognises those who actively and creatively use the Irish language in their everyday operations, reinforcing Galway’s identity as Ireland’s Bilingual City.

Volunteers and community groups from across County Galway were honoured at the annual Cathaoirleach’s Awards, which took place on Friday at the Raheen Woods Hotel in Athenry.

In October 1979, two psychology students, Margaret Brehony and Kathy O’Grady teamed up with a philosophy student, Conall Mac Riocard and formed a group of volunteers. They started a twice weekly soup run to people who were sleeping rough in Galway. They made the soup and sandwiches at home and then they would do the run.
