The stars of Irish athletics will take to national competition this weekend as the 123.ie National Indoor Athletics Championships take centre stage at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena across February 28 and March 1.

Calasanctius College Leaving Certificate student Conor Penney has enjoyed an outstanding run of success in athletics, establishing himself as one of Galway’s leading young sports stars.

Penney took gold in the High Jump with a best leap of 2.10 metres with a stunning series of jumping. Clubmate Darragh Kelly secured bronze with 1.95 metres. Penney later added bronze in the testing 110m Hurdles event.

The Galway Men’s Team won County Gold for the third year in a row, under manager Siobhan Kelleher, sharing the podium with Donegal and Kerry. The squad were led by Justin Lane, the inspirational captain of the men's team, and he also won the Pole Vault in a fine 2.30m clearance. He was fifth in the weight for Distance Throw.

Emma Moore of Galway City Harriers placed seventh in a competitive heat over 800m individually, and later in the championships was instrumental on the Women's 4x400m team who set a new national U23 record in their heat. The quartet of Moore, Kate O'Connell (Lucan Harriers), Victoria Amiadamen (Dooneen AC), and Jenna Breen (City of Lisburn AC) clocked a time of 3:34.81 to dip under the previous record (3:34.87) set in 2017.

Matthew Newell of Tuam AC competed at the European Race Walking Team Championships in Podebrady in Czechia last weekend. Newell raced in the U20 10km and recorded a new personal best of 44:52 as he finished in 19th place.

Irish Schools Cross Country Championships

Two of Galway’s top young athletes excelled and claimed medals in a highly competitive series of races at the 123.ie National Senior Indoor Track and Field Championships that was held over two days last weekend in the National Arena in Abbottstown, Dublin.

The Connacht Indoor Track and Field championships were held over two days in Athlone Indoor Arena last weekend. Galway clubs travelled in huge numbers and gained a huge medal haul over the 100 plus events on the programme.
