On a weekend that promised so much for all connected with Taughmaconnell, with the hurlers and footballers both contesting senior county finals, ultimately it ended in disappointment as neither side managed to bring home the coveted silverware.

There was plenty of drama and a few surprises too as a full schedule of round three games were played in the Westmeath senior football championship last weekend. While Maryland made it three wins out of three in group B and Tyrrellspass and Garrycastle recorded important wins in division A, the big winners from the weekend were Bunbrosna and St Malachy’s.

Westmeath’s hard-fought and unlikely win over Galway was a timely and welcome morale booster for our much maligned senior squad. Along with the u21 mid-week success it will go some way toward erasing the negativity surrounding the squad and management team for the time being at least. Let’s face it, few (outside the squad themselves) gave them a prayer against the Tribesmen. Not to take from the home side’s great win but Galway themselves must surely have expected to win.

Westmeath champions Bunbrosna were denied a place in the provincial semi-final after Nobber did what many a Meath team has done in the past by stealing a win at the death. The Westmeath champions, despite missing a number of regulars and being reduced to 14 player’s in the opening half, looked as though they were going to hold on for a valuable win when they led by a single point as the game entered injury time.
