A Mayo tourism weekend promoting the 270 forthcoming Gathering events in the west of Ireland has been hailed as a resounding success by organisers. The weekend was staged during this year’s opening weekend for the 2013 Manchester Irish Festival, which is Europe’s biggest Irish festival with some 200 events staged during its 10 day festival (www.manchesteririshfestival.co.uk). Tickets for a series of concerts and plays sold out in advance and it attracted more than 2,000 visitors.

Two of Ireland’s most prominent agribusiness leaders were awarded honorary degrees by UCD at a ceremony held on Monday 29th August. At the Agricultural Science conferring ceremony, UCD Agricultural Science graduates Dan Browne of Dawn Meats and John Moloney of Glanbia were awarded honorary Doctor of Science degrees.
