LÚNASA MAKE a welcome return to Galway and the Galway Sessions festival when the trad supergroup play Monroe's Live on Thursday June 18. A hectic and busy international touring schedule has afforded the band little opportunity to play in Ireland in recent times so this Galway gig is all the more to be welcomed.

In August 1896 WB Yeats and his friend Arthur Symons went on a tour of the west of Ireland. The poet was 31 years of age. They stayed with Edward Martyn at Tulira Castle, Ardrahan, visited the Aran Islands, and Yeats made his first visit to Lady Gregory at Coole Park.

It is a year of anniversaries for Westport Rugby Club, 90 years since it was founded way back in 1925 and 40 years since their last Connacht Junior Cup win back in 1975, and a victory on Sunday in the Connacht Junior Cup final would round off this year of anniversaries quite well. The odds are stacked against Westport, but that is not going to bother JP Walsh and Danny O’Toole’s charges who go into the game as underdogs with everything to gain.

In 1815, the warden of Galway Dr French went to Kilkenny to ask sisters of the Presentation Order to return with him to Galway to found a convent here. A Reverend Bartholomew Burke has left a fund of £4,800 for the purpose. Three sisters arrived here in October of that year. They moved into a house in Kirwan’s Lane temporarily, and from there to Eyre Square. On March 25th, 1819, they moved to a house in poor condition that had originally been built as a Charter School and which would become known as the Presentation Convent. The following year they opened their school adjacent to the convent.

Two hundred years ago (on October 27 1815) the first Presentation Sisters came to Galway and founded the first Catholic schools for girls in the city. They moved in to Kirwan’s Lane, then to Eyre Square for three years, before settling into a vacant house in the suburbs, which has been known as the Presentation Convent ever since.

A man who was on bail when he lunged at a garda with a Stanley knife has had his current prison sentence extended by six months at a recent sitting of Mullingar District Court.

Q: I went to an interview recently and going grand with all the general questions – my attitude, my ambitions, and all of that stuff. But then one of the panel, who had been silent until then, swung into action. He fired five technical questions at me. All five landed like crunching blows to the solar plexus. The rugby club in UCG was founded in 1874, which makes it the oldest such club in Connacht. They played in the Bateman Cup competition many times and won their first Connacht Senior Cup in 1897. They have held this trophy aloft 34 times in all, more than any other club in the west, and they have won the senior league 16 times. They won the Dudley Cup for the first time in 1905. Many of their players have played for Irish universities international teams, and 10 have been capped for Ireland, several while playing for UCG. One of those, Ciaran Fitzgerald, captained the British and Irish Lions. The UCG colours are maroon and white.
