A local nursing official has slammed the overcrowding “chaos” at University Hospital Galway’s emergency department earlier this week, likening it to “Third World conditions”.

Galway city central ward independent candidate Mike Cubbard has lashed out at the HSE for what he alleges was its “lavish spending” for the recent visit of Taoiseach Brian Cowen to University Hospital Galway.

Mr Fabio Bartolozzi, a Galway based hospital consultant - who is the only surgeon in Ireland to perform a cardiothoracic surgery procedure using the da Vinci robotic system - will be in the audience at the Late Late Show on Friday night to discuss it.
