The above is the title of a newly published folding map by the Royal Irish Academy. It has been compiled by Jacinta Prunty and Paul Walsh using the extensive topographical information which they collected while working on a forthcoming book entitled Galway in the Historic Towns Atlas series. They also studied old maps of the city. This map extends from Newcastle Road to College Road and from Terryland to Nimmo’s Pier. The map and its extensive indices are unrivalled in their detail and afford a unique window into the earlier medieval topography and way of life in the city.

Last Friday morning I was sitting in the newsroom of the Galway Advertiser when I received a phone call from a very distressed lady. The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, had been in town with her elderly mother the previous day. Her mother, who was recently bereaved having lost her husband a month ago, went to the post office to withdraw her Christmas pension payment. The elderly woman lost the money at some stage on Thursday and was understandably extremely upset.

Bank of Ireland hosted an exciting programme of activity in Belmullet at the end of last month in the town. The Enterprise Town initiative was organised by the bank in partnership with the local community and aimed to promote and drive business momentum for SMEs and the wider sports and social community in the locality. The schedule over the weekend included a business, sports, and community expo which took place in Our Lady’s Secondary School. Guest speaker at the event was Norah Casey, broadcaster and entrepreneur from Dragon’s Den.
