JJ Finn’s farm lies in a valley a few miles outside Gort, by the slopes of Derrybrien. For three generations, his family has farmed here. A century of agriculture, of caring for the land and the animals. In the heart of his 170 acres, the erratic Streamstown river runs down the valley, all the way to Thoor Ballylee, where once Yeats peered out at it.

My mother, who religiously listened to the Gay Byrne Show, operated a kind of censorship. There were certain topics she did not want me to hear. Week IV

The Mayo minors bowed out of the minor championship after a very disappointing display against arch rivals Galway in Elvery's MacHale Park in the Connacht quarter final on a scoreline of 3-15 to 0-11. It's a tough one to take on board considering this is the last year of the minor championship as we know it and I can only imagine how devastating it is for the players and management to be eliminated from the championship in April.

Mayo manager Michael Solan made seven changes from the side that started the previous week against Donegal with Marcus Park, Gary McHale, James Kelly, Cathal Hennelly, Ryan O’Donoghue, Barry Duffy and Colm Reape all coming into the starting 15 for this North West Cup Final against Sligo. 

The Burren Lowlands Group was among the winners at this year’s Golden Mile of Galway Awards, receiving the Built Heritage Award for a mile extending from Ballylee Cross to the Ballyaneen lios/fort. This is one of the most historic roads in the county as it includes Thoor Ballylee, an old mill and miller’s house, Yeats’ cottage, ring forts, a blessed well, and 19th century farmhouses.
