The undisputed highlight of Westport Food Festival and the social event of the year is the gala Mid-Summer Banquet in the glorious surroundings of Westport House.

Some 450 professionals from the hospitality industry turned out for the 29th annual Hotel and Catering Reviews Gold Medal Awards. The awards took place at a black-tie awards ceremony in the luxurious Lyrath Estate Hotel in Kilkenny and were hosted by TV3's Martin King.

There will be plenty on the menu for families and children at Westport Food Festival, which takes place from June 23 to June 25. There are workshops and tours, a new fast food race, and of course the Fairgreen Food Village which is fun for everyone. There is also a full programme of (free) demonstrations from top chefs like Stephan Matz, Michael Heneghan, and Bare Necessities on Saturday, so everyone gets a chance to learn. Demonstrations start at 12 noon with Stephan Matz.

The annual celebration of gastronomy that is Westport Food Festival takes place from Friday, June 23, to Sunday, June 25. The highlight of the busy festival weekend is an exclusive Midsummer Banquet at Westport House. Fittingly, Westport House was the location for the launch by Michael Ring, Minister of State for Regional Economic Development.

Local man, Michael O’Brien, from Claremorris scooped the Kavanagh Group Top Chef Award at the Wyatt Hotel in Westport last week. Michael represented the Claremorris shop, against the best from the eight other Kavanagh SuperValu entries in the country.

Westport Smarter Travel and Gnó Mhaigh Eo will present a special Bike Buffet for Culture Night, this evening Friday, September 16. The plan is to meet in Westport Town Hall at 6.30pm, where people can enjoy a deoch while catching a sneak peak of the newly written play on the life of Major John MacBride: Foxy Jack – Giolla Éireann.

Westport Smarter Travel is holding its latest family friendly Bike Buffet this evening, Friday August 19, at 6.30pm. The buffet cycle will be meeting in the Mill Times Hotel at 6.30pm for mocktails and facepainting before a leisurely spin to the Westport Coast Hotel for some delicious starters.

The 40th Westport Arts Festival kicks off next Wednesday, September 30, and this year’s festival features an eclectic mix of events for all ages across all art forms. The literary programme for this year’s festival includes the award-winning writer, John Banville, whose novel, The Sea, won the Man Booker Prize. There will also be readings from Donal Ryan, Martin Dyar, Geraldine Mills, and Orfhlaith Foyle. Dr Eimear O’Connor, art historian and author and curator, will give a presentation on Seán Keating and the Art of the Rebellion. The winners of the festival’s Poetry Competition will be announced at a special prize-giving evening of poetry and music in The Creel, featuring writer and singer-songwriter, Orlagh de Bhaldraithe.
