By the time Halloween approaches in Ireland, the garden has taken on a very different character. The long evenings have disappeared, leaves are gathering on lawns and paths, and there is that familiar mixture of damp earth, woodsmoke and cool air that tells us winter is not far away. Yet October is far from the end of the gardening year. In fact, it is one of the best times to tidy, plant and prepare the garden while also enjoying the wonderfully atmospheric surroundings that make Halloween feel so at home in the Irish autumn.

The need for full-time park rangers to be deployed in the city area was highlighted last weekend when a group of volunteers filled almost 60 refuse bags with litter from the Terryland Forest Park Alone. The shocking recovery has led to calls for rangers to be deployed to ensure that people refrain from using the forests as handy dumping areas for their litter.
