Derrybrien Wind Farm announces re-launch of community fund
Derrybrien Wind Farm, developed by Gort Windfarms, a wholly-owned subsidiary of ESB, has announced the second round of funding for communities located in the locality of Derrybrien, located between Loughrea and Gort. The fund opened last Monday January 8, and remains open until Friday March 16.
History of Bellacorick power station to be launched in Crossmolina
Powering the West - a History of Bord na Móna and ESB in North Mayo will be launched in the Town Hall, Crossmolina, this Friday evening (7pm) by retired UCD professor of archaeology Dr Seamus Caulfield. The 400 page, coffee-table style hard cover publication is a fascinating mix of personal stories and wonderful images of Erris. It is a history of the pioneering spirit of men who tamed and brought under control the “unmanageable” bogs of Erris and gave rise to huge employment in an immigration and unemployment blackspot.
Eirgrid to lodge planning application for Castlebar to Bellacorick line today
EirGrid has announced plans this week to lodge a planning application to the Mayo County Council for the uprate of the existing 110kV overhead line between Bellacorick and Castlebar (part two) today, Friday August 8. The Bellacorick to Castlebar 110kv line is approximately 37km in length and is primarily supported by single circuit wood poles with steel angle towers. In 2013 part one of the uprate was completed, comprising approximately 17km extending out of the Castlebar substation.
Council recommends €10k community investment per megawatt of power for wind farm
Mayo County Council has put forward a recommendation that the operators of a proposed wind farm contribute €10,000 per megawatt of power created to a community investment fund. However all Mayo County Council can do is make a propsal on the figure as the final decision on the ammount will be made by An Bord Planala. The proposed joint venture between ESB Wind Development and Bord na Mona at Owenwinny, Bellacorick is expected to cost in the region of €600 million to construct.
€5 billion wind farm project could create thousands of jobs
A proposed wind farm and energy storage hub, which will provide electricity to the UK market has the potential to create in the region of 2,000 sustainable jobs in north Mayo, Mayo County Council was told this week. The jobs are expected to be created in the construction of the project, along with the manufacturing and maintenance of the wind farm elements.
Grid West information centre opens in Castlebar
A new Grid West information centre has opened on Linenhall Street in Castlebar following the launch of the first phase of public consultation for the €240 million EirGrid project by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD last week. The centre will be open every Monday and Tuesday, 9am to 5pm.

A plan to bring 21st century energy infrastructure to Galway and the West of Ireland was launched by EirGrid this week. By connecting the electricity generated by the region’s huge renewable energy resources, the Grid West project will facilitate significant job creation and investment as well as contributing to national recovery and growth.
Consultation will be key in grid upgrade
Consultation with the different stakeholders in the county was the key message from the members of Mayo County Council in response to a presentation from Eirgrid in relation to a proposed upgrade of the electricity grid in the county. Eirgrid’s ambitious €240 million project would see a 400kV power line come into Mayo, at Bellacorick, to take advantage of the potential power generation from wind power and wave and other renewable sources in the future. The line would then connect with the national network either in Carrick on Shannon in Leitrim or Cashla in Galway.

New exhibition inspired by Bellacorick power station to open in Belmullet
Bellacorick: Impressions of a Place is the title of a new exhibition of drawing, painting, and photography by Betty Gannon, Michael Gannon, and Ian Wieczorek, on show at Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet, from Friday March 5 to Wednesday March 31. The exhibition is the result of authorised visits to the decommissioned power station during 2008 and 2009, and the three Mayo artists have created their own personal visual responses to the iconic building’s structure and former function.
