Concern over funding as River Basin Management Plans adopted

The elected members of Westmeath County Council have voted to adopt the final River Basin Management Plans for the protection and improvement of all waters in the Shannon and Eastern River Basins, both of which transect County Westmeath. The plans are to come into effect on July 9 this year, and will remain in place until 2015.

Westmeath rivers fall short of EU regulations

A lot of work is to be done to get Westmeath’s rivers and lakes from ‘moderate’ up to ‘good’ status in accordance with new EU regulations, according to a presentation on the Shannon International River Basin District (IRBD) received by councillors this week.
