Having comfortably outclassed Westmeath last weekend, the Galway senior hurlers face their stiffest test of the 2022 season to date when Kilkenny roll into town on Sunday for a mouth-watering clash in round three of the Leinster championship.

In 1951 Hastings Elliott Jephson was working in the ESB in Galway when he had the idea of setting up a hockey club in the city. He and his friend George Bevis decided to see if there was merit in this notion, so they simply went from door to door around town asking people if they would have any interest in playing the game of hockey.

Michael Joseph Griffin was born on September 18, 1892, in Gurteen in east Galway, one of five children of Thomas Griffin and Mary Kyne. He was educated locally, then in St Joseph’s College, Ballinasloe, and finally in Maynooth. He was ordained in April 1917 and was seconded to the Galway diocese. He worked for a year in Ennistymon and in June 1918 was transferred to the parish of Rahoon which stretched from the river out to Furbo and Corcullen. He developed a great rapport with the children of the parish, spoke in Irish to young and old, organised feiseanna, currach races, and donkey races on Silver Strand.

The Galway hurlers will have to step up their collective intensity, work rate, first touch and efficiency in front of goal if they are going to regain the Bob O'Moore Cup for 2018 in Sunday's Leinster final replay against Kilkenny at Semple Stadium (3pm).

In the year 1132, the King of Munster besieged Dún Bun na Gaillimhe (the fortification at the mouth of Galway) on Mutton Island and and destroyed the castle. There is a reference in the year 1190 to Lismacuan, ‘The Fort on the Mouth of the Harbour’. In 1641 an order was made that the lands of Mutton Island were to be made use of as commonage for the inhabitants of Galway.

Galway led by three points at half time in Sunday's  All-Ireland senior final, and for a few brief minutes at the interval some supporters talked of pressing on and winning the game from that position.
