The catwalk likes to tease us. Yes, tease us and our wallets. But there is something to be said about an investment in designer clothing every once in a while, that is why they invented piggy banks! Eye spy with my stylish eye, I see a bag by Tom Ford that has my name written all over it. So I am putting away a little of my earnings every month until there comes a time when I can rejoice in buying the bag that I will have forever. And it’ll probably form part of my children’s inheritance. Designer clobber is at the upper end of the price scale; but it can command a higher price for several reasons which we, as consumers, don’t always understand. The design, the labour intensive craftsmanship, the highest quality fabrics and finishings all contribute to the final piece that we see the likes of Karly Kloss or Jordan Dunn strut down the catwalk each season. So why not explore what they have to offer? For inspiration, if nothing else.

Going Irish

Our European counterparts, such as France and Italy in particular, have been long standing pioneers of design. So much so both Paris and Milan have been the launch pad for many a great name including Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney and Tom Ford. However, as of late, our own shores have produced some of the best talent in the world of fashion who can more than compete with some of the more internationally known designers. Look at how well the likes of Paul Costello, John Rocha, Joanne Hynes and Orla Kiely have been internationally; with role models like these to look to, new Irish designers have the fashion world at their sewing machines.

Recently packing for a trip to New York has made me take a hard look at my beauty routine. Could it possibly take that many products to get me out the door? And what about out of the country? My God, have I turned high maintenance or is this all perfectly normal?

MAC’s colour corrector, in radiant rose, can be used as undereye concealer. Alona, MAC make-up artist in Brown Thomas Galway, taught me this. If you are naturally very pale and have a tendency to get blue bags under your eyes as I do, this is the dream product. If you have yellow undertones, and your under eye area looks red, use the Light Boost in yellow. I love when a product is clever and you can use it for a purpose other than what it was originally intended. I have had a love affair with concealer for over three years, and ditched it in a heartbeat for this product, never looking back. Alona is a genius make-up artist who gives great individual tips; she told me to bring my corrector further down my eye area than I think, and my blush higher up than I think , and this made a huge difference. March into the Mac counter and ask her anything about your make-up routine. It’s like she has taken the Hippocratic oath, except for make-up artists, first doing no harm — she assesses what needs correcting and sets about doing that while explaining what she is fixing. She is amazing.

First thing every girl should have — a signature scent. How you smell says just as much about you as how you look. A familiar smell instantly floods us with memories of a certain person. Every time I smell Estée Lauder’s Beautiful I think straight away of my best friend, who actually only wore it one summer many years ago. One to try at the moment is Tom Ford’s Black Orchid. It is warm and sensual and I love to wear it when it is raining outside — it the perfect scent for this time of year. Come into Brown Thomas’s fragrance wall and Joan or Ali, fragrance experts on counter, will get you sorted with your own signature scent.
