A GALWEGIAN and a Galician, singer-songwriters Kevin Herm Connolly and Susana Garrido Pombo will play two shows in County Galway this weekend, playing both original songs and "some covers with a twist".

MYTH, FAIRYTALES, and folkloric characters who continue to capture the imagination, are the subject of a new exhibition by County Galway artist Kathy Ross, which is currently on show in The Secret Garden, William Street West.

IN RECENT years, Galway’s Moonfish Theatre Company, founded by sisters Máiréad and Ionia Ní Chróinín, has been winning a burgeoning reputation as one of the most imaginative and exciting around.

As part of this weekend’s Galway Early Music Festival, Moonfish Theatre Company are presenting a new stage version of the famous old Irish saga, Mad Sweeney/Buile Shuibhne. The story relates how a cleric puts a curse of madness on the Ulster king Sweeney who, there after, spends his days roaming, bird-witted, through the treetops of Ireland, shunning human company and enduring nakedness, hunger and loneliness. At every stop in Sweeney’s flight through Ireland, he pauses to give a poem on the location and his plight, with his descriptions of the countryside and nature, as well as his pathos, being both vivid and moving.

FRANCES HODGSON Burnett’s much-loved children’s story The Secret Garden is among the attractions at the Galway Theatre Festival where it is being staged in a new adaptation by Moonfish Theatre Company.
