In 1904, MJ MacDonnell, Confectioner, announced the fact in the local papers, that he had just opened a TEA ROOM at Number 8, Wiilliamsgate Street where ladies and gentlemen ‘can have freshly made tea and cakes – all cakes made freshly on the premises with the purest ingredients only. Seed, Plum, Rich Plum, Madeira, Citron, Cherry, Sultana, Genoese, Pastry etc. White and Brown scones, Cream scones and Crumpets always in stock. Ice Creams in 24 hours’.

Galway Bohemians, the early days

John O’Dowd got the inaugural juvenile soccer league (for boys under-16) underway in Galway in 1931-2. The clubs competing included; Crusaders, Hotspurs, Reds United, Emmetts, Unknowns, Bective Rangers and Hibernians. The swamp was the only soccer pitch available in Galway at the time. The league was a big success and this prompted the organisers to run a minor league in the 1932-33 season.

Cheque presentation to Oncology Patient Comfort Fund in UHG

A generous donation of €3,240 was recently presented to the Oncology Patient Comfort Fund at University Hospitals Galway (UHG) in memory of the late Durcan Forde from Sickeen, Woodquay in Galway who had been a patient in the oncology day ward for two years.
